August Message from the Mayor,

Also in the month of July, the City of Garland hosted the “Partnering for Regional Success” meeting with our surrounding cities: Rockwall, Rowlett, Wylie and Sachse. This quarterly meeting began in the City of Rowlett earlier this year, when the participants discussed the North Texas 2050 initiative, a private, public and academic partnership created to serve as a forum for dialogue and action on important issues relating to the sixteen county region surrounding Dallas and Fort Worth.
Garland had the honor of hosting the second meeting at the Branding Iron Restaurant. Council members, City Managers and leaders from the five cities heard a presentation on “North Texas Transportation.” With the upcoming expansions to the President George Bush Turnpike and the DART Blue Line, transportation is of vital importance to each of our cities.
With all the legislative activity in Austin, City Council is discussing a number of bills and their impact on our city. I encourage you to become involved and knowledgeable about these actions. We have already begun discussions on SB 100 relating to municipal elections and will continue those at upcoming council meetings. This bill will potentially impact all citizens, due to the possible changes in voting dates for municipal elections. The Council will continue to discuss our options before a decision is made. I will also explore the possibility of forming a Charter Review Committee and look forward to receiving your input in that process. For additional updates and information, you may follow City Council meetings on CGTV, Time Warner channel 16 and Verizon Fios channel 44, or on our website, www.GarlandTx.gov.
